Subject - 115v Air Cond. vs. 230v
kheffo All things being equal (BTU's, EER, etc.) is there any difference between a 115v unit and a 230v unit? An electrician once told me that a 230v would save me a couple of bucks on my utility bill. True? Any Info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ryan_J The power company bills by the kilowatt hour.

So, lets say your A/C operates at the following:

1) 230V, 15A
or
2) 115V, 30A

Either one of these equals 3,450 Watts.
kheffo I got it now. Thanks very much.
Scott Vickrey If the motor was wired 230V as opposed to 115V would it be slightly more efficient?
JimmyDee There may be a few cents a year because of a little more voltage drop loss because of the increased amperage but it would be pennys, not dollars and not worth worrying about.

I don't think so. Voltage drop in the feed wires would account for a little better efficency but not with the motor.

Scott Vickrey Just checking, Changing the voltage of the unit would'nt change the wiring of the motors anyway.
David Hyatt When voltage goes up amperage goes down. But you pay for watts.
