I'm looking for the best method of rewiring my 70plus year old house..Every box I open the insulation flakes and wires break. I want to rewire to add safety and peace of mind..Should I start from top down. I've always done my own electrical work and was trained in NY city code. My current residential code still requires armoured cable.Any tips?

| Prepare to suffer! Your may to have to get behind all of those boxes unless you become really handy with a fishtape. It's going to be tough putting a new hole in the top plate where the roof pitches over the wall your working on. Not to mention laying on theinsulation. I'm itching a-l-l-ready! . However, it can be done. Abandon the old wiring in place where you can't get to it in the wall. If you can pull it out that's great. but it's probably stapled to the studs. You have to get the old wires out of the box though. Here's how I would fish the cable down inside the wall. First remove the old wiring. Then take the cable to the attic. Next get about two feet of number twelve AWG solid wire, bend it in half and tape the loose ends to the end of the cable your going to send down the wall this should make a loop for you to catch with your fish tape.Drill your hole or use the old hole to drop the cable down to about 6" above the box. You can do this by measuring the wall and marking the cable. Go down to the box and run your fish tape up through the box and fish for the cable. When you catch the loop pull the cable out through the box. Other wise you will have to remove the box and reach in there and pull out the cable. This is really a two person job (one in the attic and one in the house). Enjoy
