This is a oldy but a goody. If you ever have a PVC pipe that either has wires in it or you just can't get a hacksaw into position to cut it. Like in a trench. You can use a piece of nylon string, pull both ends back and forth rapidly and it will cut through PVC.

| Fishing line? That's cool! I'll try it.

| No, nylon cord, string ect...

| I agree David. Using string to cut is a great thing, especially when it is in a trench or when the wires are already pulled, like in a pole light.

| Be careful when you get through that you don't also cut the insulation on the wires!

| Another way to quickly cut 1/2 inch or 3/4 PVC in the cold winter, is to score it with your knife all the way around, then snap it by bending it across your knee. This only will work when the temperature is down below 20 degrees Fahenheight. Sure saves time following the brickies, though.

| Stripping 350 or 500 kcm is also effective with monofilament, especially if you can't nick the copper.

| Yet another pvc cutting tip. When I cut pvc with wire inside it I slide a piece of scrap emt or rigid thats large enough to slide over the wire yet small enough to fit inside the pvc. this will protect the wire regardless of your method of using a saw or string. I won't use anything less than 3/4"pvc, just not worth the extra pulling effort.

| I doubt this will work for everyone, but when you have to cut PVC with string it's buried and you have to replace the damaged section. This can be hard to get in place when you only have a short section uncovered. So on the last job I had like this I took 2 couplings to our machine shop and got them to cut the groove from the center of the coupling so that it would slip all the way up on the conduit. I then slipped them up on the existing conduit, put the replacement section in and cemented it all together. Oh yeah, I marked the conduit so I could get the couplings centered on the joint

| Also cutting the coupling ends off a new stick of pipe works. You go thru a lot of pipe this way.
