Subject - Garage Outlets & Gas Line
qrtetbari I am having a licensed electrician install a 20 amp breaker for outlets in my unfinished garage. Since I don't know where I want all of the outlets to go yet, he is installing one, then I will tap off that one for the others later. My issue is that on the main wall where I want most of the outlets to go (where my workbench is), I need to go past the main gas line coming through the garage (between the studs). Since I may plan to insulate and finish the garage later, I would like to put the wiring through the studs, but naturally wiring that close to (i.e., running across) a gas pipe makes me nervous. Apart from going against what seems like common sense, I didn't want to violate any code either. Any suggestions? Thanks!
David Hyatt If you can run the wire behind the line and through the studs, this would be ok even if the wire shorted for some reason it wouldn't get to the gas. Only if the gas line was leaking would this be a problem and if it was leaking you would know. As far as a code violation it wouldn't be. Hope this helps.
Electricman If it makes you feel any better look in your basement there is probably romex already in physical contact with your gas piping system. Like David said as long as the gas isnt leaking and there are no shorts in the circuit it shouldnt be a problem. When wiring and driiling wood framing studs maintain 1 1/4 inches from the front and back of the studs. DRYWALL SCREWS
qrtetbari Thanks, guys, that helps. Unfortunately, here in CA, I am on a slab, so no basement for reference, but your suggestions are great. I would not even have thought of the clearance issue for drywall screws. Glad to have this forum available!
JimmyDee If you are bothered by the wire going past the gas line you may consider putting an additional layer of insulation between the wire and the gas line. A little plastic or tape wrapped around the gas line would give you this. This however is not needed.
