Subject - Splitting current at the meter???
Tassabra Alright.. where to start.... ok first off this house was built in 1920. We have completely ran new wiring throughout the house. We are going to be removing the old fuse box and replacing it with a 125amp C/H breaker box. Now comes the part I need some help on. We built a barn and are wanting to run electric to it. All wiring is done in the barn and there is a 125amp C/H box in the barn. We need both 110 and 220 out there. The plan was to go from the meter on the pole and split the current as to run to the house and barn. What do I need to use at the meter to split the current? We live in a county inwhich they don't care what we do... there thing is that it's your property do what you want. Also... we are putting in a hot tub outside the house... should I put a shutoff to the tub or just run it straight from the house?... Please help if you can. I would like to buy what I am needing here in a few hours and start installing. Thank... Ok scratch the part on the hottub... my hubby just informed me that he wants to come off the pole (meter) with the hottub wiring as well. So now I need to split the current 3 ways and it would probably be in the best interest to have a 4th spilt just incase. Got to love farm life. Seems we are always building and adding on. Thanks for your time and help.

JimmyDee I think I would put two on edit: (an) outside, weather proof service breakers on edit: (panel) on the pole and go from there. This way you can put as many circuits off from it as you want. It is similar to how we would serve a mobile home in this area. With the meter, not on your home and on a pole, that is the service according to the National Electrical Code and everything from that point would be a sub panel. Use the proper size breaker and wire to feed the house and barn and you should be all right.

edited after reading Davids post.
David Hyatt You will need to install a panel outside feeding from the meter. Then as Jim said sub feed barn and house from there. The panel you install outside must accomodate the extra breakers you need. All sub feed panels will require a 4 wire feeder.
Tassabra I want to thank both of you for taking the time to help me out. So far I have been right on track with what needs to be done, but then this "friend" who is suppose to be an electricion came by and informs me that we are way off base and that it's going to cost us almost a 1000 bucks more than we had already alotted for this project. Personally... I think the "friend" better either stick to his drugs or his work... because combining them isn't working for him. Then again I told my husband that it could just be a scam for him to pocket some extra cash, because of course he was telling us we would need a licenced electricion to do the job and he would be more than happy to do it for us and to pick up what we was needing to complete the job right.... Imagine that!!! I died laughing. Well once again thank you, I am going to pick up a 200amp outside breaker panel tomorrow.

ricky Where I'm from all this work would require a permit from the city, and would be inspected by a city inspector. The homeowner could however pull the permit and do the work. The hot tub will need to be on a GFIC (Ground Fault Interupter Circuit) for your protection,Just in case the radio falls into the tub.
