Subject - new light, new outlet
afrans I have a foyer that has no light nor any electrical outlets in there. I assume I will have to climb in the attic and add an extension to the wire up there to go down the wall to the plug area, then over in the ceiling to where I want the light, correct? Is there anyother way to do this without cliimbing in the attic? Also, with the wire up there, do I just splice i t? or what?
JimmyDee Looks like there is no other way but to get in the atic and no you don't just splice the wires. All splicing has to be accessable and in an approved box.

Scott Vickrey A good way to avoid having to climb up in the attic is to pay someone else to do it.
Electricman You probably would want this on a switch as well. The way you described the light wouldnt be switched. Many factors are involved here ie fishing wires, cutting drywall, crawling in insulation, if you havent done this kind of installation you might want to ck with someone who has. No matter how you slice it sounds like a trip into the attic. Happy Easter
ricky For an electrician this is an hour job.you will spend half a day.Make sure power is off to any circuit you tap into or are working on.It's eazy to get shocked! If you can find a circuit in the actic to splice into, that saves time.Like electricman said, you want a switch,so you need a switch leg fished down the wall.Using old work boxes lets you cut a hole big enough to get your hand in.I've cleaned up lots of wiring done by homeowners. If you're gonna do it,Put a box in at every splice, leave a little extra wire,it does'nt cost that much.Use wire nuts and leave 6 inches of wire in the box,not two.Watch the wire colors and ground
Use wire staples to keep things neat.Oh yea, take a shower when you're done cause you'll have fiberglass insulation all over you.Anyway, thats the process.Easy if you're used to it.Good Luck.
