Subject - How to add fuses
chrsb I downloaded the program to give it a try, how do you spec fuses? It has alot of breakers but I can't find out how to spec a fuse. I also was messing around with the one line diagram and panel sizing and could not get any of them to show fuses.
DiverDan The release after next will be adding and utilizing a fuse database. It's application will be for over current protection of devices (motor devices by default, but it can be applied to any device) for short circuit and arc flash analysis and motor protection coordination (scheduled for Volts-Enterprise edition)

The one line diagram does show fuses for motor devices connected to the MDP. The release after next will also enable circuit layout and analysis with an interactive, user defined one line diagram.

In short, this means that you'll be able to specify fuses, but only as an over current protection device.

As a note, other than cost and trip speeds, there is no difference in the application sizing of a fuse or circuit breaker, only a difference in the image.
chrsb I thought for motors branch protection there was a huge diffrence (ref. Table 430.52) I also read your release order, I like the ideal of a Volts "light". Alot of us electricans don't need all that fancy stuff, give us 3 phase motor, conduit sizing, wire sizing, service sizing, and a few fill tables were are all set. Although the trend of design build is moving along, in the future we will probally need all of what you have to offer.
DiverDan Hi chrsb,
Table 430.52 is for short circuit and ground fault over current sizing, not over load sizing. Although circuit breakers are listed, I personally recommend fuses as they usually trip in 1/8 cycle instead of 2 or more cycles. As energy is accumulative, the quicker a protection device trips (begins degradation) the less energy will be transferred or absorbed.

Also, I think your thoughts about Volts Light are very good. Since Volts Light will be specifically for electricans, please start another thread asking for your and others needs, requirements and thoughts about a program designed for especially you.
