Service drops near windows supposed to be 3 foot away. If I am reading section.9(a) correctly if it is in conduit that clearance does not apply???? All service drops in my area are in conduit now days???? How about in your area? If this is a 2 story dwelling and the point of attachment is within 3 foot of a window I understand the purpose of this section. I am installing a service (upgrade) between two windows that are 5 foot apart and about five foot off the ground. There shouldn't be an issue here should they??? The drop will be in PVC.

| This applies to open conductors and open multiconductor cables only. It is with regard to "spans" of wire.

| 2002 NEC quote: Service Drop. The overhead service conductors from the last pole or other aerial support to and including the splices, if any, connecting to the service-entrance conductors at the building or other structure.

You mean, I'm not the only one who installs service drops in PVC conduit? What type of conductors do you use? I have been using THWN copper for more than 10 years now.

| We use PVc for drops and have for twenty years, however if the EMT is in good shape and existing we will use it as well... As far a SE and SER cable the outlying areas do allow this as well as the city but we use conduit in the city and I always use conduit and never use SE cable.

| I know what you guys mean but neither of you install the service drop. Only the power company does. NEC defines the service drop as the wires from the last pole to the house. It is the tri plex or quad plex and has nothing to do with what we as electricians run. Jim

| Here on a residence, if we don't have to penetrate the roof, the power company installs the service mast and wiring to the meter.

| Funny thing, I am getting a very hard time over this very subject from the local utility. Started out as a simple service upgrade and has now turned into a very heated discussion with the local forman.
client added a second story to there house, no problem, wired , inspected by underwriter no problem, old service is in very bad shape , forman showed up for pre install inspection and went thru the roof, seems the contracter for framing removed the service from the house prior to approval big mistake, now I am getting the flak for it.
anyway I'm rambling, sorry, I think that was thier biggest issuse , but they are giving me a hard time over clearances, homeowner wants thru the roof install, utility does not, compromise time if I can get them to talk.
