Hi all. I am new here and by no means an electrician, so forgive my lack of knowledge. I am a professional architectural model maker and am in need to put 6 white leds into a model. I would like it to be powered by 110v power so there is no need to replace batteries. The leds that I have are: 3.6volt 20ma 1100mcd diodes that are 5mm. There will be 6 of them all lighting up a small walkway in the model. What kind of transformer should I use? What would be the easiest way for me to get this up and running? Radioshack should have been able to help but they were useless. I am open to any suggestions. The reason for the leds and not small bulbs was for heat considerations and for size placement. So I think they are the only way to go.
Thank you very much in advance, Kyle

| You could try a 24vdc transformer, and wire your leds in series. I havent wired leds, but they are a diode, allowing current flow in one direction so it should work. Have you ever looked into fiber optic lighting for your models? You have a single source for your light, and you can install it remotely away from your model, using very thin fiber leads to your model. Supervision International is one industry leader, but very expensive. Fiber Optic technologies in Canada is more reasonable price wise, you want to talk to Kathy. I think fiber lighting will open a new door for you in your model making.

| Thanks for the reply. Fiber Optic would be cool. But for a wider spread of light the leds have worked well in the past. They are also way easier to buy localy. There used to be someone here who was an electrical engineer and used to light all the models. He has since moved on to greener pastures. I just decided to use a 12v ac to dc convertor that is 300 mA. I read that that should work. Wish me luck,
Kyle

| I have a really simple solution. Go to a hobby store and purchase your lighting and transformer. They will carry all the stuff for model making, doll houses and train layouts. Its alot safer and less expensive.
