Subject - programmable logic controllers
dmitchell I need to learn PLC's and Variable drive controls. Can anybody offer up a good reference? I dealt with each a couple of times by looking over a shoulder, need to go on my own with it.
Thanks
lctrc789 DMitchell, I would say a lot of this depends on where you work, which state etc... and do they offer programs, schooling etc, where you are located at.
I have been doing these for a 9 years now, and have taken a few courses but it is hard to just jump in and say you want to do PLC s without some knowledge or some one in the feild who will guide you through them.
Do you know of any where where you can take classes at? Does your employer help you in any way with them etc...?
dmitchell Thanks Pat. I trying for a new job. The next class to jump in is in Sept. Looking for a head start.
JimmyDee Some of the best training I've seen is written by the manufacturers of the PLCs themselves. Allen Bradley has some great help books that come with the lower level PLCs. If I were you, I would consider purchasing an AB Micrologics cheaper with some software or controller and it should have a lot of training info right with it. I think the last time I checked, the AB Micrologics with 6 inputs and 6 outputs was about $180. Once you get to the point that you understand how they work, moving on up to the big boys is fairly easy.
An understanding of basic ladder logic for controls not using a PLC is also a big help. I taught a basic course in PLCs at our local Community College for several years and love them things.

blackrd I had an instructor who is a prolific author on industrial electricity. Glen Mazur is his name, and he is one of the best instructors in industrial electricity I have ever met.He has about 10 diffrent texts in print, I dont believe you will find a better author. His texts are carried by American Technical Publishers. 1155 West 175th st. Homewood, IL.60430.their website is www.go2atp.com. He has at least one book on plc's, and several on motor drives.
