Subject - beam clamps
lctrc789 I think some where in here I had answered or responded to a question about this once, I just did a small metal building with steel beams as the suuports...Anyway this contractor installed a 325 amp meter base and two 200 amp services with a ground rod with #6 wire no problem, as well as ran a 1/0 to the water main pipe the of course up wth a 1/0 to the steel he used a beam clamp and I had told him NO< he was irate said we have always used beam clamps for grounds, and installed a lug on them....
I said that beam clamps are approved for holding or clamping, not made for grounding and that I would come back out on Monday when he has corrected the problem..
I suggested to him to either cad weld or drill a hole through the beam grind it down on both sides and install the bond lug with a 1/4 20 or 3/8 bolt..
Have any of you ever ran in to this problem before?
Ryan_J I've never ran into it, but it violates 250.70
Alfred I remember years.... ago working on a job a helper did this same thing. He did not know the code requirement but did it anyway. He was the bosses pet and got away with alot. It was a code violations then and it still is today. Some people never learn!
Thanks Alfred Johnson
renosteinke I think we're looking at this issue a little to narrowly...There do happen to exist grounding devices that look a lot like a beam clamp- only made of some copper alloy. There are also compression-type devices made to fit on beam flanges without grinding.
