Me and a friend of mine have been going round and round on this, and I would just like some fellow electricians to answer this and see who is right. Question is as follows in two parts:Part 1, Can a 20 & 15 amp receptacle be used on a 20 amp circuit? Part 2, Can a 15 & 20 amp receptacle be used on a 15 amp circuit?

| a 15 amp recep can be used on both 15 and 20 amp circuits. a 20 amp recep cannot be used on a 15 amp circuit. Well, it can but it is not allowed. There is no such thing as a 15&20 amp receptacle.

| Check out 210.21(B)(3) to find receptacle ratings for circuits. Note also 210.21(B)(1) on single recepts for this is where some electricians get confused. You cannot use a 20 amp receptacle on a 15 amp branch circuit, However you can use a 15 or 20 amp duplex receptacle on a 20 amp branch circuit, unless the circuit is an individual branch circuit with a single recept and no other device then the recept must have an ampere rating equal to the rating of the circuit. Note that a duplex receptacle is not a single receptacle.
