Subject - Plasma Cutter connection
Gregg I am adding a new "welding room" onto my garage. I recently purchased a nice Thermal Dynamics Plasma cutter. 120% of max would mean that I need a 50 amp circuit for the cutter. Before I decide to even use it @ home I wanted to get an idea of the amount of work and what would be required for an electrician to install the wiring (I'm an electical engineer that does low volt wiring but I'm no electrician). I want to know if I can add a breaker to the existing house box and wire to it or what needs to be done. Again, I'm not doing the work I just want to get an idea of what would be involved.
RSB I would recomend you have aleast a 200 amp service. Without seeing the instalation I would be against using on a 100amp. If you have gas range, dryer, waterheater and etc. ,then maybe. If you have a large enough panel, you can add a breaker and then run a ckt to the garage. Here again, without seeing, this maybe easy or hard to do. I am sure you can call a local contractor for a est. and his opion once he see 's you site.
