Subject - grounding
gwhavens 1) I double check sink light fixtures with a voltage sniffer. Light "on", I've assumed the fixture isn't grounded. Most of the time, I'm right. Once or twice, I've rechecked with a multi-meter and found the voltage sniffer wrong! The fixture IS grounded even tho the sniffer said it wasn't; or, the fixture is NOT grounded even tho the sniffer said it was. What gives? By the way, the voltage sniffer ALWAYS tells me when a refrigerator is plugged into an ungrounded outlet.

2) Is it possible to buy new two-prong outlets? eg. when you want to replace an ungrounded 3-prong with a 2-prong (to show the circuit is ungrounded?

3) When using A GFCI to replace an ungrounded 2-prong: does the GFCI protect sensitive electronic equipment from damage? It trips off at <.005 amps in <1/40th second, sure -- but does that really equal the safety of a grounded wire?
lctrc789 The best way to see if something is properly grounded to me is the old hot and ground test with a voltage tester that is the best way to know if it is grounded or not.
You can replace non grounded type of receptacles with the same and yes, you can still buy them.
As far as the GFCI in a non grounded tpye of installation where you do not have grounded recpts. and you use a GFCI that is for people protection and not for appliance protection and yes they will trip at 5 milli amps or so. Does it equal a ground wire not IMO at all.
If you have something that should be grounded I say run a ground wire and ground it or move it to a recpt. where it can be properly grounded.
