Old EKR Archives: Subject - 230 volt
tbt22 Hey guys,
Can anyone tell me why I dont need a neutral on a Air Conditioner motor 230 v single phase? If its alternating current how does it alternate without a common?Through the ground?

Thanks
boccinono No, it does not alternate through the ground or the neutral. Both those Phases are alternating at a phase angle of 90 degrees, plus or minus. Voltage is a difference of potential. To answer your question each phase is alternating between phases.
Scott Vickrey Have a look at this post, I think it will help you understand.

lucky1122 The Ac uses 230V which means it does not require a neutral . Neutrals are required for line to neutral loads which this AC unit does not have.
lucky1122 An electric range or an electric dryer would be examples of equipment that require a neutral since two types of loads are served both 240V and 120V
ArmyPrimePower Isn't 230V 50Hz single phase (phase-neutral)? I haven't seen any 230V, 3 phase (phase-phase).

230 or 240 volt 3 phase is used in many small commercial systems and gives a true 3 phase and a single phase 120/240 lighting system with the use of 2 transformers. It is called a high leg or wild leg system and is hooked (usually) in an open delta configuration. High leg is 208 volts to ground.

RODALCO There are still some older areas in Europe where 127 / 220 Volts 3 phase systems are in use.
I'm originally from the Netherlands and in some places it was still in use till the late 1990's.
Also in Belgium this 3 x 220 Volts, now 3 x 230 Volts is still in use.
Eventually all will be superseded with the standard 230 / 400 Volts system.
