Subject - Conduit Requirements
ewyborny What determines if Metal or PVC can be used for an electrical installation? We are adding a water pumping system with 480 volt three phase wiring. The motors will normally draw less than 2 amps.
electricalpro PVC may not be used as raceway indoors.
David Hyatt I was told PVC could not be used inside a residence, because of the toxic fumes it would produce in case of fire. But I can't find it in the code. Code ref. please.
boccinono Rigid PVC can be used indoors in a industrial setting( sect. 352.10). I'm thinking its an industrial setting because of the 3 phase 480v. There are a few factors to think about when using PVC verses rigid metal conduit. Is the conduit going to installed where physical damage may occur. Is it cold where the PVC may become brittle. Are there chemicals present. These are some of the factors when choosing what type of conduit to run. Hope I helped.
David Hyatt I checked the code section on PVC and still could not find where it could not be installed in a residence, not saying it can but would like to know where it is found.
