Subject - adding another switch
crazycmb76@aol.com I would like to add an on/off switch to my dining room and am not sure what I need. I have one switch in the room and want to install another one on the other side. Any help would be great.
Thank you.
David Hyatt First make sure power to exsisting switch is off. The easiest way would be to take a 12/3 or 14/3 cable pending on the amperage of the circuit, between the existing switch and the one to be added. 20 amp circuit 12 awg, 15 amp circuit 14awg. At the new switch connect the black wire to the black screw on that 3-way switch, connect the red and white to the other two screws, doesn't matter which. This switch is done. At the exsisting switch take the red and white wire to the same color screws on the new 3-way switch. Now take one of the old wires and hook it to the black screw on the 3-way switch. The last old wire needs to connect with a wire connector to the black going to the 3-wire. Now you are done.
Beware this task should be completed by an electrician, This web site, the administrator, or myself will not be held responsible for any accidents.
boccinono I don't completely understand what you are asking. Are you controlling the same light with 2 switches? If so you would need 2 3-way switches, and it will involve fishing the wall, and pulling some cable. I would definitely have a licensed electrician take a look at it. I hope i helped, but if I didn't, check back with this site periodically. there is alot of good information on it.
electricalpro PLease explain why your adding another switch. what will it control ?? and are you running new wire to what ever you are controlling ???

What you are talking about is called a 3-way switch.
Here's how they work:
