Subject - Turning on Range, trips breaker for entire house
AtWitsEnd Sorry to bother you Electricians, but I'm in a dilemna. I've been trying for almost 2 months now to address a problem our home is having through an inept insurance company. Here is the problem, whenever I would jar the heating element for the oven, the power to the entire house would go out. For example, I'm cleaining the oven, my hand hits the heating element*BAM* no power to the entire house.
My experience with this insurance company so far:
1. Sent electrician- said he had no clue, call an appliance guy.
2. Sent an appliance guy- said we needed new stove>insurance wanted second opinion.
3. Sent out an applicance guy- he replaced heating element and controller (?), were able to turn on the oven and cook a pizza. Husband came home and opened and shut the storage drawer at bottom of oven, *BAM* no power to the entire house. Then he tried just turning the range on *BAM* no power to the entire house and the breaker for the oven/range has smoke coming out of it in the basement.

HELP!!!! I need a decent Electrician in Kennesaw, GA to help me with this problem!!!
Scott Vickrey I would say you need a new oven for sure and if you keep trying to use the one you got you might need a new house too. You need to get the electrician back over there to replace that oven circuit's breaker and inspect the entire circuit from end to end for burned connections and degraded insulation. DO NOT TRY to use that oven again! Do Not install a new one and try to use it without getting the electrician over there. If the insurance does not want to pay for all this extra work then change insurance companies, they don't sound to be doing there job very well.
kbsparky It sounds like you have a loose connection inside of that oven somewhere that is shorting itself out. If the appliance repair guys can't find the loose wire or connection, get a new oven.

And, it also sounds like you have either:

1) A weak main breaker, OR
2) High available fault current at your house, which can cause the mains to trip out at the same time when a branch circuit is shorted out.

FWIW, if situation #2 applies, you will get a lot of sparks, smoke, etc even loud bang when that main goes
AtWitsEnd Thanks for the advice. We purchased this 15 year old home about 7 months ago and the sellers provided a home warranty that is basically useless. All the electrician or appliance guy can say is "wow, I've never seen that before".

I'm going to hire my own electrician as this insurance company doesn't seem to contract any good ones. Any advice on how to find a good one?

Thanks!
