Take your little garden tiller and use it to loosen the tough soil with sweet percision. If you have one that has tines wider than the engine you can dig to great depths easily. You will still have to shovel out some loose dirt but, Your back will be greatfull and the time it takes to dig the ditch will be markedly reduced.
