Subject - Placement of computer in area of electrical panel?
Bev This may or may not be a question for this forum. I really need to know if there is any danger to my computer equipment if my desk is placed in the region of our electrical panel (200 amp service).. The panel is located on the upper part of the 7 1/2' basement recroom wall. As it happens the floor area is a perfect location for my computer desk and office area. The desk would back on to the wall located directly below the electrical panel.. Is this advisable ?? I am concerned as to whether there would be electrical or magnetic interference with my computer ? Thanks.......
JimmyDee I would see no problem with the placement of your computer. The only thing I can see that would be a problem is the NEC states the electrical panel shall be readily accessible. That means, nothing in the way of getting to the panel. As far as electrical interference, I would not be too concerned about it.

stedder You might run into a problem if you use a wireless router and place it to close to the panel (it will reduce usable signal) and (believe it or not) it may shorten the life of your monitor but a foot or more away shouldn't be a problem EXCEPT for the clear working space around the panel required by code, if you have a problem and an electrician (or insurance inspector) has to get in there you'll have to move all that stuff.
Bev Thank you for your input,it was helpful. I have sliders on the bottom of the desk so yes, I will be able to allow access to the electrical panel if necessary..
