Subject - low voltage dimmers magnetic vs. electronic
r1racer just curious as to what the difference between a low voltage dimmer (magnetic) and low voltage (electronic) dimmer?

why do some low voltage recessed lighting fixtures require one or the other?
Electricman Some fixtures use magnetic ballasts some use electronic ballast. So in other words you have to match the dimmer to the fixture, Type,Volts,Wattage,VA, etc.... all factors must be taken into consideration when choosing a dimmer. I have seen a few misapplications of dimmers , once I saw a 600 watt rotary incandescent dimmer used as a paddle fan speed control...customers question was,Why does my brand new fan hum like that?
r1racer lol
Scott Vickrey Here is an example of an electronic dimmer which is what most dimmers manufactured today are.

They use a variable resistor a diac and a triac to vary the timing of the cut off of the wave form.
JimmyDee Scott, I can see you have been busy. That is a great drawing.

Romex Racer Scott, where do you get graphics like that? That's very good.
