Subject - RECEPTACLES
fdk479 IF I HAVE A WALL IN A SPACE CLASSIFIED AS LIVING SPACE AND THE WALL EXCEEDS 12', BUT THE WALL IS GOING TO HAVE BUILT IN BOOKCASES WALL TO WALL, AM I REQUIRED TO PROVIDE A RECEPTACLE ON THIS WALL?
Electricman I have had the same situation in some of the custom homes that I have done. The first time I came across this situation I called the AHJ and his interpretation was since they where built in bookcases no receptacles where required in this space. But if the bookcases wher of the free standing type he said we would have to follow 210.52(1).
Ryan_J Yes. You can use floor receptacles if you would like though. Just keep them within 18" of the wall.
stedder No, no furniture can be placed (logicaly) in that area although the customer may want one or two for clocks or bookshelf radios etc.
But you probably need to install 6' from both ends max(like an opening).
kbsparky As far as I know, the answer is yes.

You can either:

Install the receptacle(s) in the kick space of the bookcase, under the bottom shelf, OR

Install blank space(s) within the shelving to allow for the required outlets, OR

Install floor outlet(s) within 18 inches of the case.

stedder I just finished a job with builtin bookcases wall to wall, floor to ceiling, they were 12" inch deep standard bookshelves. One end came within 18 " of a door opening and the other end ran into a standard wallspace, at the time of my rough, the inspector said "the shelves have to be built before the final" they were and there was no problem. This is in NY and it may be different elsewhere. His reason was because of the no furniture I mentioned before, also the shelves were not adjustable.
fdk479 so far i have two no's and two yes's, i guess i'll call the inspector and ask him how he wants it done, that always seems to work the best.
