When doing work on an older home that is either being remodeled or the electrical is being upgraded when is it required to use the arc faults? If all the wiring is not redone you know how circuits can just go everywhere! Same goes for the new fire alarm code, when exactly are you required to install the smokes on a circuit? It seems like you would have to almost strip the house down to the frame if all this is required on upgrading,of course there is always wire mold! Any help with this?

| That all depends on the local jurisdiction. Some places require you to upgrade to the current code whenever changes are made. For example: You install a new outlet in a bedroom. The inspector may require you to use AFI protection on that outlet.
As for smoke detectors, again, this depends on the locals. In Sussex County Delaware, for example, anytime a building permit is issued for any remodeling, they will require you to install smoke detectors in all the bedrooms, if they are not present. We did a porch job -- it was an outside porch, and did not have direct access to the house -- they still required the installation of smoke detectors in all the bedrooms before approving the final inspection.
Call your local inspection authority for your requirements.
