Subject - Ground barrels
binney Back in my appretiship days my instructor, who originally came from the east coast, talked about ground barrels. At the time it went in one ear and out the other. I've always used greenies, but a month ago i came across crimp on wire nuts, I've been using these in my multi-gang boxes
and leaving as many tails as there are switches. The only problem i see
with this is in the manufacters instruction it tells you to crimp and then slide the plastic cap on.

Is there such thing as a ground barrel? Or, is this it? Do you see any problems with it?
Scott Vickrey You can buy the ground barrel by itself without the cap.
JimmyDee StaKon (sp?) brand the number is PT70. The larger ones are PT80.
Jim
Electricman Here in Pa. we call em splice caps or Buchanans.
CooCooMike You may need the correct crimper for it. Either a Buchanan crimper or a pair of pliers with a built in crimper.
kbsparky I assume you are referring to crimp sleeves here. Ideal makes them, Cat #30-410 will hold up to 4 #12. Here is the web site for a pic:

Buchanan also makes crimp sleeves, out of a different material. Ideal's are brass coated steel, while the Buchanan are soft copper. Of course, Ideal owns Buchanan, in case anyone was wondering.
stedder are we talkin' like ideal and buchanan crimps here? (me thinks it's sta-con) STAY CONNECTED
journeyman491us ...Hi Binney.
...Your question on "ground barrels" is a good one. So your instructor was from the east coast? (so am I by the way) In this neck of the woods we call em' "Buchanans" (made by company of same name)Proper terminology would be "ground crimp sleeves" in manufacturers lingo and are available from Buchanan,Ideal, and GB. Off the top of my head the smaller ones are rated for 7-14's...not sure about the larger ones. Just make sure you give the grounds a good twist...there is no substitute for that...course that is why we have "greenies" and crimp sleeves.
