Subject - Wiring Methods for Metal Residential Garage
JimmyDee Posting for an e-mail request.
Residential customer has had a metal garage built on his property. The building is 45 feet by 40 feet. I'm installing a sub panel from his house and I am not sure of the wiring methods for metal residential garages. I assume you can't use romex but would bx be acceptable or should I use conduit. Also I can't find any receptacle requirements for a garage this size. The customer says he will be storing old cars in this garage.
lctrc789 Jimmy, I would venture to say that the metal garage is wired as a regular garage sub panel with the exception of the metal building has to be bonded to the service sub panel...
I would ask the customer where he wants recpts. etc... as well as what kind of lights and how many.
I don't know that I would use romex, but possibly m/c cable if allowed or just run 3/4 emt. Of course GFCI s are still required.
We done a steel building a few years back and we had to ground the main pole of the building and bond the steel siding on two sides to the ground wire.
stedder It may be both cheaper and eaiser to drive a rod opposite end from the panel and run a bond to it from the structural steel than to loop to the service grounding, it also may be required, not sure with a building that small. Bx or mc s/b ok, we've run on the horiz. struts and secured w/ straps where possible but pipe out on visible surface just to keep neat.
