Subject - Small motor-220v to 110v conversion question
RonP I have a 110v starter motor on a 10HP snowblower I was given. Well, the end cap casting was cracked so I found I reasonable replacement motor that the guy said he had converted from 220v to 110v. Well, it spins but doesn't have enough power to turn the engine over and it barely spins up fast enough the push out the bendix gear. I feel like the guy just put a new 110v volt power cable on the motor and is trying to pawn them off as 'converted'. My electrical knowledge is very rusty but doesn't something in the windings need to be altered (if even possible) to change the voltage? The motor is very simple, four windings, which appear to be in series, and four brushes. The commutator on the 220v motor seems to have twice the number of contacts as my 110v one.

I got my old motor working by using the good end cap off the new motor but I'd like to use the new motor in case my old one eventually dies.

Any help appreciated!

Ron
skynrd If it isn't a dual voltage motor you can't change it. If it's straight 240v it will tr to run but won't have any power.
