Subject - 12/3 wiring

How do you wire 12/3 wire in you basic electrical outlets and light switches wich have only one hot in the switch but the 12/3 wire has
two hot wires. I have a couple of ideas but not sure if they are legal or safe.
Mike Delaney yoloco67,

Sounds like what you need is 12/2. If all you have is 12/3 either cut the red off in the box, or cap it off with a wire nut, and use the black and white conductors.
kbsparky What are you trying to accomplish? Mulitwire circuits? Split-wired receptacles? Or carrying a hot line thru a ceiling fixture?

How much experience do you have in the electrical trade?

If you would read the posting at the top of the page under the forum posts, you will find a posting about the purpose of this forum and The Electrical Knowledge site in general. We do not exist for the do-it-yourself electrical individuals nor are we here to instruct in projects that they may attempt on there own. I am going to lock this thread because it appears to me like it could head that way. If I am wrong in this assumption, please e-mail me and I could reverse this decision.
