How do you wire 12/3 wire in you basic electrical outlets and light switches wich have only one hot in the switch but the 12/3 wire has two hot wires. I have a couple of ideas but not sure if they are legal or safe.

Sounds like what you need is 12/2. If all you have is 12/3 either cut the red off in the box, or cap it off with a wire nut, and use the black and white conductors.

| What are you trying to accomplish? Mulitwire circuits? Split-wired receptacles? Or carrying a hot line thru a ceiling fixture?
How much experience do you have in the electrical trade?

| yoloco67, If you would read the posting at the top of the page under the forum posts, you will find a posting about the purpose of this forum and The Electrical Knowledge site in general. We do not exist for the do-it-yourself electrical individuals nor are we here to instruct in projects that they may attempt on there own. I am going to lock this thread because it appears to me like it could head that way. If I am wrong in this assumption, please e-mail me and I could reverse this decision. Jim (moderator)
